Valparai–Athirappilly Road Reopened; Public Transport Services Resume

Vehicles resume movement on the Valparai–Athirappilly Road after repair works following monsoon-related damage.

VALPARAI, June 5, 2026:

Public transport services have resumed on the Valparai–Athirappilly Road following the completion of emergency repair works on sections damaged by recent monsoon rains.

The Valparai–Athirappilly Road, an important route connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala, suffered damage near the Kalvettu area close to Koomatti after continuous rainfall associated with the Southwest Monsoon. As a precautionary measure, traffic on the route had been temporarily suspended.

Concerned departments carried out immediate restoration and strengthening works in the affected area. Erosion-damaged sections were reinforced, and repairs were undertaken to ensure the safety of motorists. Following technical inspections and safety assessments, authorities declared the road fit for vehicular movement.

With the completion of the repair work, buses, cars, tourist vehicles, and other forms of transportation have been allowed to operate on the route once again. The reopening has restored normal connectivity between Valparai and Kerala destinations, including Athirappilly and Chalakudy.

Meanwhile, light drizzle continues intermittently across Valparai and its surrounding catchment areas due to the ongoing Southwest Monsoon. Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution while travelling through the hilly terrain, as monsoon conditions can increase the risk of landslides and falling tree branches.

The reopening of the Valparai–Athirappilly Road has brought relief to local residents, tourists, traders, and transport operators. The restoration of this key inter-state road link is expected to support travel, commerce, and tourism activities between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
